Just days after Donald Trump proudly declared that he had transformed the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool from a supposedly “filthy” eyesore into something “far more beautiful than it did in 1922,” nature had other ideas.
Thin layers of algae are already floating across the water.
Part of Trump’s lavish and entirely unnecessary 250th anniversary makeover of Washington, the Reflecting Pool renovation ended up costing taxpayers millions more than originally projected. According to reports, the project included $14.2 million to repaint the pool “American Flag Blue” and another $1.7 million for a high-tech “nanobubbler” system that was specifically designed to prevent the very problem Americans are now seeing unfold in real time.
Hope it came with a warranty.
The Interior Department is already scrambling to explain away the embarrassing optics, insisting that the algae is merely “residual” growth originating from supply lines that remained dormant during construction.
Maybe.
But for a president who spent years branding himself as America’s master builder and mocking everyone else’s competence, it’s difficult to ignore the irony.
Because this project wasn’t just about algae.
It was personal.
Back in 2012, the Reflecting Pool underwent a major renovation under President Barack Obama at a cost of roughly $34 million, including the installation of a state-of-the-art ozone filtration system. Trump repeatedly pointed to the pool as evidence of what he portrayed as Obama’s failures, describing it as “dirty” and “gross” while promising that he alone could fix it properly.
So he launched his own makeover.
Millions of dollars later, after endless hype and self-congratulation, the results appear almost indistinguishable from what came before—except now there’s algae floating on top within days of completion.
Once again, Trump’s attempt to one-up Barack Obama appears to have flopped spectacularly.
Despite the flashy announcements, the expensive upgrades, and the inevitable victory laps, the project now risks becoming another monument to overpromising and underdelivering. The water looks largely the same.
Maybe even scummier.
Nothing says “expert builder” quite like spending millions to fix a problem and having the exact issue you’re supposedly solving reappear before the introductory press conference is even over.
There has long been a saying that everything Trump touches dies.
Casinos. Airlines. Steaks. Vodka. Football leagues. Universities. Charities. Social media ventures.
At this point, perhaps the real surprise isn’t that the Reflecting Pool makeover hit an immediate snag.
It’s that anyone expected this boondoggle to be different.
