Critics made fun of First Lady Melania Trump after a video went around showing her trip over while introducing President Donald Trump at a White House event honoring military moms on May 6.
A White House representative said the first lady finished her introduction and the event went on as usual.
According to Radar Online, people noticed Melania stopped and smiled after she said the word “caring,” then went on to talk about the president remembering every American soldier as someone’s child.
Social media users responded quickly.
One person said, “She’s been here for 28 years and speaks like someone who’s only been learning English for a week. Usually, I wouldn’t care, but you’ve been First Lady for almost six years now; get some English lessons.”
Another user wrote, “I’ve been told she speaks eight languages.
Obviously, English isn’t one of them.”
A third person asked, “Can someone please repeat what she said in English?
” while another said, “She’s ridiculous, man! She’s an embarrassment to this country on the world stage!”
One commenter added, “Can’t read and lying is a crazy combination from a First Lady.
“
News reporters and commentators shared clips of the introduction widely.
X user Aaron Rupar said, “Melania Trump is having some difficulty reading,” referring to her stumble on the line, “A mother is awestruck when she welcomes her child into the world.”
Melania’s campaign team pushed back against previous coverage.
Her then-communications director, Stephanie Grisham, criticized a TV show for reacting to her earlier written reply to a New York Times article. Grisham said, “If by ‘destroy’ you mean being disrespectful and hypocritical while making fun of someone’s accent, then the ‘ladies’ of [The View] succeeded,” according to AOL.
A Trump representative didn’t reply right away to requests for comment on the recent online posts.
Melania Trump moved to the U.S. from Slovenia in 1996 to become a model.
She’s faced jokes about her accent since her husband’s first term. Media coverage of her speech and public appearances has often brought up discussions about how first ladies are treated and criticized in the public eye.
